Trust & safety

Make every deal a safer deal

A few checks before you pay, meet, or hand over a gadget can prevent most marketplace scams. These steps help buyers and sellers protect themselves while trading on Gadget Malawi.

Escrow and payments

Not active yet

Escrow is a payment arrangement where a trusted service holds a buyer's payment while the item is delivered. When the buyer confirms that the order arrived as agreed, the service releases the funds to the seller. If there is a problem, the payment can be held while the issue is reviewed under the service's rules.

Gadget Malawi does not currently hold payments in escrow. Orders do not create an escrow balance, and payment is currently arranged directly between buyer and seller, such as cash at pickup or a transfer made outside the platform. Do not assume that a payment is held, insured, reversible, or guaranteed by Gadget Malawi. We will update this page when escrow becomes available.

Protections on the marketplace

Shop verification

Verified shop accounts have submitted identity and business details for review. A badge is a useful trust signal, not a guarantee that every item, message, or transaction is risk-free.

In-app conversations

Use marketplace chat to discuss the item and agree on the price, payment, and handover. Avoid sharing passwords, PINs, one-time codes, or unnecessary personal details.

Listing reports

Report suspicious listings, prohibited items, or bad actors. Your report is anonymous to the seller and helps our team review concerns.

Clear listing details

Listings show the seller's description, specifications, condition, photos, and price so both sides can discuss the same expectations before meeting.

For buyers

  • Check the seller's profile, reviews if available, and verification badge. A badge is not a substitute for your own checks.
  • Ask for clear photos, the device condition, included accessories, and any faults. For phones and computers, ask to see the serial or IMEI in person.
  • Meet during daylight in a busy public place. Bring someone with you when possible, and tell a trusted person where you are going.
  • Inspect and test the device before paying or confirming the handover. Check that it is not locked, damaged, or missing agreed accessories.
  • Never pay a deposit just to reserve an item unless you understand and accept the risk. A screenshot or SMS is not proof that money has cleared.

For sellers

  • Describe the item honestly, including faults, repairs, battery condition, and what is included. Use recent photos of the actual item.
  • Confirm the buyer's payment in your own account or wallet before handing over or dispatching the item. Do not rely on screenshots or messages from the buyer.
  • Never share a mobile-money PIN, password, one-time code, or approve a payment request to receive money.
  • Meet in a public place and avoid inviting unfamiliar buyers to your home. For delivery, agree on the courier, delivery cost, and handover details in advance.
  • Keep a record of the item's condition, serial number, agreed price, and dispatch or handover where appropriate.

If something feels wrong

Pause the transaction if someone pressures you, changes the agreed payment details at the last minute, sends suspicious links, or asks for codes or advance fees. Keep relevant messages and payment records. Report the listing and contact our team. Reports help us review marketplace activity, but they do not replace a payment provider, police report, or legal advice.
